Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reported that 54 illegal immigrants have been detected this year, with 48 in Karimganj, 4 in Bongaigaon, and one each in Dima Hasao and Dhubri.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday that the state government will maintain heightened vigilance to address the issue of infiltration from Bangladesh. Sarma assured that most infiltrators are being swiftly apprehended and pushed back within hours of crossing into Indian territory.

“There is no chance that people crossing illegally from Bangladesh can enrol themselves on the voter’s list in Assam,” Sarma said at a press conference.

“We have apprehended many who entered illegally and they were pushed back within a few hours. Most were arrested in the early morning, around 5 a.m., and were sent back before 9 a.m. Within two or three hours, they cannot register themselves in the voter’s list,” he said.

Sarma emphasised the necessity of remaining vigilant on this issue. “We have decided to implement a series of measures for detecting illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, as there could be instances where a few infiltrators might not be apprehended by security personnel,” he said.

Earlier on Saturday, Sarma highlighted the government's efforts on social media, stating: “We are intensifying our efforts to remove illegal immigrants from Assam. The state government is initiating coordinated actions, including enhanced surveillance, closer coordination with central agencies, and additional deployment of forces.”

The Assam Police Border Organisation has long been responsible for detecting illegal immigrants entering Assam through its international borders. Recent reports show an increase in detected illegal immigrants, prompting intensified measures across the state.

Sarma shared data indicating that from January this year to date, 54 illegal immigrants have been detected — 48 in Karimganj district, 4 in Bongaigaon district, and one each in Dima Hasao and Dhubri districts.

“Of these, 45 individuals were successfully pushed back to their country of origin, while nine were arrested in Karimganj.

Additionally, there have been reports of suspected non-Indian nationals and foreign-origin individuals in certain areas, particularly in Upper Assam and North Assam districts. Detecting such individuals is crucial given the potential threat to national security,” Sarma added.
