Two schoolchildren lost their lives, and one is in critical condition after a speeding car, driven by an allegedly intoxicated head constable, struck them in Haryana’s Palwal, officials reported on Tuesday. The children, aged five, seven, and nine, were returning from Gariba Public School when the incident occurred.
The five-year-old and seven-year-old died at the scene, while the third child was transferred to PGI Rohtak in a critical state.
The driver, identified as Narendra, a Haryana Police head constable assigned as a reader at the Nuh DSP office, was apprehended. Locals claimed he was drunk and attempted to flee after the collision. Villagers pursued him for about 500 metres and handed him over to the police.
The victims’ father, Shahbuddin, accused Narendra of being intoxicated and using his uniform to intimidate others after the crash. "He didn't stop after killing my children. He even argued with villagers, refusing to admit what he had done," he said.

The incident sparked protests in the area. Villagers trailed the police vehicle transporting the accused, insisting that his medical examination be conducted in their presence to prevent any cover-up. Some blocked the road with motorcycles, compelling the police to take the family to the station.
A police official confirmed the head constable’s arrest. "The vehicle has been seized. Whether he was drunk will be established by the medical report. A post-mortem of the deceased is being conducted in Nuh," she said. Additional police forces have been deployed in the village as tensions remain high.
