Former Assam Congress president Ripun Bora has rejoined the Congress party, marking his return from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday.

Bora’s return was formalised at an Extended Executive Committee meeting held in Charaideo, where he was welcomed back by AICC general secretary in charge of Assam, Jitendra Singh.

After joining Congress, Ripun Bora said, "Congress is my old home and today I have returned to my home. I was in TMC for two years. The environment that is there in Assam and the entire country, the need of the hour is to unite against the corrupt, fascist and anti-people BJP to uproot BJP from Assam to make it liveable. Hence, along with 36 office bearers of Assam state committee (TMC), I have joined Congress to strengthen it."

Singh, addressing the gathering, described Bora’s return as a "ghar wapsi" (returning home).

“On behalf of AICC, I welcome Ripun Bora back into the party. It is a ‘ghar wapsi’ for him,” Singh said.

He added, “Though Bora may have joined TMC and became its state president, Congress is in his DNA.” Singh expressed satisfaction that Bora had returned unconditionally as a party member.

Bora, who left Congress in April 2022 to lead TMC in Assam, cited the need to combat the BJP’s dominance as a reason for his return. “For whatever reasons, I had left Congress for two-and-a-half years.

But it is the demand of the state and country that BJP needs to be uprooted from power, and Congress is the only party which can do it,” Bora said.

He criticised TMC for its limited regional influence and suggested that staying with TMC would only help the BJP by dividing opposition votes.

“The people of Assam are fed up with the misrule of the BJP government. We will all work together to strengthen the Congress further and expose the ruling alliance’s corruption and communalism before the people,” he added.

State Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah, who was present at the event, noted that Bora’s return had been facilitated after discussions with the AICC. Borah expressed hope that Bora’s comeback would fortify the party’s position.

Alongside Bora, several senior TMC functionaries also joined Congress.
