A decomposed body of a 26-year-old man was found in an unused room at the Shahkot police station on Sunday night. The deceased has been identified as Gurbhej Singh, aka “Bheja”, a former kabaddi player from Bajwakalan village. He was working as a helper at the police station.

Gurbhej’s family members said he had left for the police station on Friday, but did not return home since. His family tried to look for him, but could not find any clue relating to his whereabouts. It is learnt that he had informed cops stationed at the police station that he was going to a village fair. The body was discovered after a foul smell started emanating from the room located on the roof of the police station. The body was handed over to the family for cremation after post-mortem examination.

DIG Jalandhar Naveen Singla said Gurbhej might have been bitten by a poisonous insect or animal. He said the exact cause of death would be known when the post-mortem report is available.
