Manipur Police have reported the death of five people in fresh violence in the state's Jiribam district on Saturday morning.

One person was shot dead in his sleep while four armed persons were killed in subsequent exchange of fire, a police officer said.

Militants entered the house of the person who lived alone in an isolated location around 5 km from the district headquarters and shot him dead in his sleep, he said.

After the killing, a heavy exchange of fire broke out between armed men of the warring communities in the hills around 7 km from the district headquarters, leading to the deaths of four armed persons, including three hills-based militants, the officer said.

Earlier on Friday afternoon, an elderly man was killed and five others were injured in a bomb attack on Friday afternoon in Moirang, Bishnupur district.

The explosion struck the residence of former Manipur Chief Minister Mairembam Koireng.

The improvised rocket hit the compound where the victim was preparing for religious rituals.

This attack marks the second rocket strike in the district on the same day. Earlier, a rocket was fired from an elevated position in the hills towards Tronglaobi, a residential area approximately 45 km from Imphal.

Further details are awaited.
