Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded UNESCO’s recognition of Maratha Military Landscapes and urged citizens to visit the forts and learn their rich history.

A remarkable chapter of Indian history has received international recognition, as the Maratha Military Landscapes, a group of 12 hill forts across western and southern India, have been inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The announcement came during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee, being held in Paris between July 6 and 16.

The network, which comprises 11 forts in Maharashtra and one in Tamil Nadu, has been acknowledged by UNESCO for representing an exceptional example of a strategic military system that underpinned Maratha power during the late 17th to early 19th centuries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to the announcement with jubilation, urging citizens to explore the grandeur and historical depth of the forts. Taking to X, he wrote: “Every Indian is elated with this recognition. These ‘Maratha Military Landscapes’ include 12 majestic forts, 11 of which are in Maharashtra and 1 is in Tamil Nadu.

“When we speak of the glorious Maratha Empire, we associate it with good governance, military strength, cultural pride and emphasis on social welfare. The great rulers inspire us with their refusal to bow to any injustice. I call upon everyone to go visit these forts and learn about the rich history of the Maratha Empire,” the Prime Minister added.

“This network played a key role in the Marathas’ rise as a major political and military force,” UNESCO noted, highlighting how the landscape-based fortifications were designed to be both naturally defensible and logistically effective.

The inscribed forts including Rajgad, Shivneri, and Gingee among others stand as enduring symbols of the Maratha Empire’s military ingenuity, most famously exemplified by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his successors. Built across different terrains, these sites reflect adaptive planning that combined natural features with man-made defence systems, securing control over trade routes, settlements and supply lines.

The inclusion of these forts on the UNESCO list is seen as a boost not only to cultural preservation but also to heritage tourism, particularly in Maharashtra, where most of the sites are located. The Maharashtra government had actively supported the nomination, alongside heritage experts and conservation bodies.

While UNESCO has inscribed several Indian sites in the past, including forts, temples, stepwells and cultural ensembles, the recognition of the Maratha Military Landscapes adds a distinctly indigenous martial legacy to the global heritage roster.
