Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is set to address two poll rallies in Jammu and Kashmir today, in Surankote, Poonch, and Shalteng, Srinagar, according to party sources.

“Gandhi will address a public meeting in Surankote town today around 11:30 a.m. in favour of the NC-Congress alliance candidate Shahnawaz Chaudhary. After the rally, he will fly to Srinagar in the afternoon to address a separate rally in favour of KPCC president Tariq Hameed Karra in central Shalteng, Srinagar. Soon after the rallies, he will fly back to New Delhi in the evening,” the sources mentioned.

Before this, Gandhi addressed two separate rallies at Sangaldan in the Banihal constituency in favour of former JKPCC president and party candidate Vikar Rasool Wani, and another at Dooru Anantnag in favour of party candidate and AICC general secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir.

Meanwhile, NC president and former chief minister Farooq Abdullah is also likely to join Rahul Gandhi at the rally in Srinagar today. Besides Gandhi, several senior AICC leaders, including Bharatsinh Solanki, Dr Nasir Hussain, and Alka Lamba, are already in Jammu and Kashmir campaigning for party candidates.

On Sunday, during a press briefing, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge stated that Congress is committed to providing seven guarantees focused on social justice and economic empowerment.

Kharge posted on X, saying, “The Indian National Congress pledges to safeguard the constitutional rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Our progressive development agenda is for everyone. The seven guarantees of the Congress party for Jammu and Kashmir will usher in a brighter future, focusing on social justice and economic empowerment,” Kharge added.

Congress general secretary KC Venugopal remarked, “As Jammu and Kashmir votes to shape its destiny after a decade, the Congress and its alliance are committed to keeping the people of J&K at the centre of its policymaking,” he posted on X.

The elections in Jammu and Kashmir are taking place for the first time since the 2014 assembly elections, marking the first election since Article 370 was abrogated from the erstwhile state.

Voting for the second phase is due on September 25, with the remaining third phase on October 1. The results will be announced on October 8.
