The night temperatures have plummeted across famous tourist resorts in Kashmir Valley ahead of the New Year celebrations.
Gulmarg, the famous ski resort in North Kashmir, recorded minus 10.0 degrees Celsius on Sunday, while Pahalgam recorded minus 9.2°C, and Sonamarg registered minus 9.9°C on Monday, officials said.
The MET office in Srinagar said that two more Western disturbances are likely to impact Jammu and Kashmir in quick succession.
These disturbances are likely another light snowfall to the scattered areas during the evening of January 1 and 2.
Whereas “the cold wave conditions will continue to prevail over the Kashmir valley till the end of the year," the MeT office said.
Subsequently, the Srinagar-Leh National Highway also faced disruptions as a result of the snow accumulation on the road.
Meanwhile, Ladakh recorded a minimum temperature of minus 16 degrees Celsius on Sunday, turning it into a cold desert.
The MET office has issued an advisory stating that in case of snowfall, sub-freezing temperatures, and icy conditions over the roads, including plain and higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, tourists/ travellers/ transporters are advised to follow the admin/ traffic advisory.
The icy cold conditions on Monday continued in Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir valley, resulting in the freezing of the water bodies and pipelines disrupting normal life.
The recent snowfall has caused disruptions in normal life, affecting trains, air travel, and roads, including the lifeline National Highway 44 connecting Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country.
