Haldwani in Uttarakhand was the first home of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after his family moved there in 1948 following the Partition of India. He enrolled in 6th grade at M.B. Inter College in the Bhotia Padav area of Haldwani.
The country is mourning the loss of Manmohan Singh, who had a special connection to Dehradun, where his relatives lived. He often visited Dehradun, enjoying the city’s pleasant climate and spending time with his family.
Haldwani: The first home after partition
After the Partition, Manmohan Singh’s family settled in Haldwani’s Bhotia Padav area. He completed his 6th grade at M.B. Inter College in 1948. A year later, the family moved to Amritsar, where he continued his education at Hindu College.
His transfer certificate from Haldwani is still kept as an important document at the school.
Relatives in Dehradun
Manmohan Singh’s uncle, Gopal Singh Kohli, lived in Dehradun’s Race Course area, where his family still resides. Relatives recall how Manmohan Singh loved the city’s climate and visited often.
Tributes from state leaders
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep sorrow over Manmohan Singh’s passing, remembering his humble nature and dedication to the nation.
In a social media message, CM Dhami said, “His entire life was dedicated to the service of the nation. I pray for his soul and offer strength to his family and supporters in this difficult time.”
Harish Rawat’s tribute to Manmohan Singh
Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat also paid tribute, calling Dr. Manmohan Singh a visionary finance minister who laid the foundation for India’s economic growth.
Rawat wrote, “He steered India towards becoming an economic superpower and envisioned a 5 trillion-dollar economy. Under his leadership, 27 crore people rose above the poverty line. He empowered the poor with rights like MNREGA and provided forest dwellers with land rights.”
A legacy of rights and reforms
Dr. Manmohan Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister saw major reforms, including the loan waiver for farmers, the Right to Information, Right to Education, Right to Medical Care, and Right to Food Security. Harish Rawat emphasised, “Dr. Manmohan Singh gave the common man a series of rights and reforms.
Though he is no longer with us, his legacy will remain in our hearts and in the hearts of all Indians. A great Sikh, a great Indian, and a great human being, Dr. Manmohan Singh, will always be remembered.”
