The low-altitude areas of Himachal Pradesh are facing some of their worst summers this season, with temperatures in places like Hamirpur touching 40 degree Celsius.
With school-goers falling sick because of the heat wave and dangers of heatstroke rising, the parents of students studying in various schools of Hamirpur on Friday urged the district administration to revise school timings and start schools earlier than 9 am.
Parents said they have demanded the Deputy Director of Education (DoE) and Deputy Commissioner, Hamirpur, to review the school timings and start schools at 7 a.m. or 7.30 a.m. until 12 p.m. or 12.30 p.m.
The state government had already empowered the deputy commissioners concerned to take decisions in this regard, the parents added.
In Una district, schools are closed until June 30 for summer vacations, while in Hamirpur, the first part of the vacations had ended on June 8 while the second part would begin from July 13.
Rajni, a parent, said children across the district were reaching school amid scorching heat and despite this, no guidelines had been issued by the DoE regarding holidays.
Parents said children were falling ill and feeling dizzy every day at school owing to the heat. Younger children from pre-primary classes were the worst hit by the heat wave, parents lamented.
An official spokesperson of the administration said that they are keeping a close watch on the situation and had sought reports from the education department before taking a decision.
