Guwahati faced scorching temperatures today, with the mercury soaring to 40°C, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre.
This prolongs the heatwave gripping the city, marking one of its hottest days in recent memory.
Dispur, a Guwahati locality, also reported 40°C, while areas near Guwahati Airport and IIT Guwahati experienced slightly cooler yet oppressive temperatures at 39°C.
Historically, Guwahati has crossed the 40°C threshold only three times, twice in April 2014 and once in May 1960.
The city's highest recorded temperature stands at 40.6°C in April 2014, with the highest May temperature hitting 40.3°C, as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
Looking ahead, the IMD predicts a slight respite, with temperatures expected to hover around 38-39°C on May 25.
Subsequently, a significant drop is forecasted from May 26 onwards, bringing relief to a more tolerable range of 30-34°C.
Residents are urged to take precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged sun exposure. The anticipated cooldown later this week promises much-needed relief to Guwahati's heat-stricken populace.
