A bridge got swept away, and 54 people were saved after their homes were flooded by heavy rains in Maharashtra's Thane district in the past 24 hours, officials reported on Monday.
According to a statement from the district administration, the intense rainfall on Sunday damaged around 275 houses in various areas and carried away about 20 vehicles.
The district received 65 mm of rainfall on Sunday.
Thane city recorded 120.87 mm of rain in the 24-hour period ending at 6.30 am on Monday, according to Yasin Tadvi, the head of the local civic body's disaster management cell.
He mentioned that the city received 45.98 mm of rain within just one hour, between 3.30 am and 4.30 am on Monday.
The city has received 858.87 mm of rainfall since June 1, compared to 917.90 mm during the same period last year, he added.
Shahapur taluka, located in Thane district, experienced significant damage, particularly with a bridge on the Asangaon-Mahuri road being washed away and the Barangi river in the Gujrati Baug area being flooded, according to reports.
Flood waters inundated 70 houses in the region, damaging various household items. Additionally, 20 two-wheelers and four-wheelers were swept away.
In the Gotheghar area of Shahapur, water entered the Wafa Nursery area, necessitating the rescue of 38 occupants from three houses.
In the Vashind area, 12 individuals were rescued and relocated to safer locations following the inundation of 125 houses, as reported by officials.
The heavy rainfall also caused soil erosion along the railway tracks in Atgaon.
Furthermore, about 12 houses in Shahapur sustained partial collapse, according to officials.
In Kalyan taluka, five houses in Khadavali and three in Waveghar were affected due to flooding, they said.
The officials said that water entered 40 houses in different parts of Bhiwandi taluka and damaged a 'kutcha' (mud) house in Goutepada.
