The Kashmir Valley has recently encountered its first significant and widespread snowfall, putting an end to a prolonged dry spell that persisted throughout January. Meteorological Department officials are forecasting the likelihood of more snowfall in the upcoming days.

"Most parts, including Srinagar, experienced a major snowfall of the season," stated officials.

According to reports, "most areas in the valley, including Srinagar, received a substantial amount of snow. The plains saw 3-6 inches, while the middle and higher reaches recorded up to 1 foot of snow."

"Srinagar recorded around 6-8 cm of snow until 10:30 while it was snowing. The renowned ski resort Gulmarg received 20 cm, and Pahalgam received 12 cm of snowfall," mentioned an official.

Moreover, the minimum temperature in the valley has slightly improved, although sub-zero temperatures during this season are typical for the region.

In Jammu, the minimum temperature was recorded at 9.6°C, exceeding the normal winter temperature by 1.2°C.

The Meteorological (MeT) official indicated that the forecast suggests ongoing light to moderate snow across various areas until late Sunday afternoon, followed by a gradual improvement in conditions. On Monday, partly to generally cloudy weather is expected, with the possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches. Dry weather is anticipated from February 6 to 12.

However, heavy snowfall has led to the suspension of all flights bound for Srinagar, and numerous trains have been halted, significantly affecting normal life in the valley.

J&K police, through their official channel, reported, "The Srinagar-Jammu national highway is currently open for traffic in both directions, accommodating light motor vehicles. However, caution is advised due to slippery conditions and rainfall."

Following the conclusion of the 40-day harsh winter period known as 'Chillai-Kalan' on January 29, Kashmir is now in the midst of the 20-day-long 'Chillai-Khurd' phase of winter, lasting until February 19. Subsequently, the region will transition into the 10 days of 'Chillai-Bachha,' or "baby cold," commencing on February 20 and lasting until March 1.
