The monsoon continues to wreak havoc in the hill state, with the death toll rising to 80. As many as 52 individuals lost their lives in rain-related incidents like landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts, while 28 others died due to causes such as road accidents, falls in steep terrain etc, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) report said.
Since the onset of the monsoon in the state on June 20, Mandi district has been the worst affected, reporting 17 rain-related deaths, followed by Kangra with 11.
"As per cumulative data compiled till July 7, the state has recorded 80 deaths--52 from rain-induced incidents, 28 from road accidents,” stated an SDMA official.
Deaths due to rain-related incidents included 14 due to cloudbursts, 8 in flash floods, 1 from landslides and others due to other weather-related events.
The report states that 320 houses have been destroyed, another 38 partially damaged, and over 10,000 livestock and poultry have perished. Damage to public infrastructure, including roads, power lines, and bridges—is estimated at ₹692.65 crore.
So far, the state has recorded 23 flash floods, 19 cloudburst and 16 landslides.
At least 128 people were injured, and several villages remain cut off. Relief camps have been set up in the affected areas, including Mandi, Kullu, Kangra, and Shimla while NDRF and SDRF teams are continuing rescue operations.
Locals and tourists have been urged remain vigilant, especially in sensitive areas near rivers, slopes, and construction zones. The government is closely monitoring the situation and is providing assistance to those affected by the natural disaster.
As the persistent rain continues, the authorities have issued a flash flood alert in seven districts, warning residents to stay vigilant and prioritise safety.
