HP agri varsity wins first design patent

The innovation offers veterinary students and practitioners with a realistic, safe, and effective tool to learn the diagnosis and management of uterine torsion, a major obstetrical issue in farm animals that often leads to the loss of both calf and mother.

Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (HPKV), Palampur has achieved a milestone as the Department of Veterinary Clinical Complex, Dr. G.C. Negi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, secured its first-ever design patent.

 

The patent, registered under Design No. 460628-001 on May 29, 2025, has been granted for a “Uterine Torsion Simulation Model for Veterinary Training.”

Conceptualised in 2021 and developed over four years of dedicated work, the project was led by Dr Ankit Ahuja, with contributions from a multidisciplinary team of faculty and researchers, including Dr Pankaj Sood, Dr Amit Sharma, Dr Pravesh Kumar, Dr Akshay Sharma, Dr Adarsh Kumar, Dr Vikas Thakur, Dr  Tanvi Thakur, Dr Snayu, Dr Sneha, Dr Stuti Kaushal, Dr Shreya Thakur, Dr Sukriti Kheterpal, Dr Urvashi Sharma, Dr Smriti Sandhu, Dr Jaspinder Singh, and Dr Viplove Thakur.

 

The innovation offers veterinary students and practitioners with a realistic, safe, and effective tool to learn the diagnosis and management of uterine torsion, a major obstetrical issue in farm animals that often leads to the loss of both calf and mother.

 

Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr A.K. Panda, a veterinarian himself, congratulated the team on this outstanding achievement, commending their commitment and teamwork. He said "The grant of this patent reflects the innovation culture and dedication of our faculty and researchers. It will strengthen veterinary education, provide students with advanced hands-on learning opportunities, and contribute to better reproductive health management in animals."

 

Dr Adarsh Kumar, Professor and Head of the Veterinary Clinical Complex, lauded Dr Ahuja’s vision in conceptualising the idea, adding that this achievement underscores the department’s focus on translational research, connecting classroom learning with field applications.

 

The patented model not only enhances the quality of veterinary education but also promises practical benefits for livestock farmers across Himachal Pradesh. Improved diagnosis and timely treatment of uterine torsion cases will lead to better survival rates, higher productivity, and increased economic returns for farmers.

 

This remarkable innovation marks a proud first for the University’s Veterinary College, reaffirming its commitment to innovation, applied research, and rural development.
