RG Kar impasse continues as docs & Mamata clash over live-streaming

Impasse continues as docs & CM clash over live-streaming

WB CM Mamata Banerjee waits at her residence for a meeting with doctors.

The scheduled meeting between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the agitating junior doctors who are protesting over the RG Kar incident did not take place on Saturday either.

Agitating doctors who went for the meeting said: “When we agreed for talks with just signed minutes of the meeting, we were asked to leave.”

Today, on the request of the chief minister, medics agreed for a discussion without live-streaming or video-recording being done from their end.

However, it is learnt that the meeting could not take place as the protesters delayed in agreeing for the meeting forgoing one of their key demands that was live-streaming of the discussion to maintain transparency.

According to photographs and information shared by the state secretariat Nabanna, Banerjee along with DGP Rajeev Kumar and Chief Secretary Manoj Pant were waiting at her residence for the junior doctors to join the meeting.

The meeting was to start after the medics reached Banerjee’s residence at Kalighat here at 6:45 PM on Saturday.

However, both the parties had to wait for the discussion to take place as the contention was the ‘live-streaming’ of the meeting.

While appealing to students to come inside and not to get drenched in rain, CM Banerjee said: “I would request you all to come inside and attend the meeting. As the matter is before the court, we cannot allow live streaming. I will video-record the meeting and will provide you with a copy only after permission from the Supreme Court.”

She, further, added: “Today, you said that you want a meeting, so I have been waiting. Why are you people insulting me like this? Earlier on three occasions, I have been waiting but you people didn’t come.

“We will video-record the meeting and will provide it to you after the Supreme Court’s nod. Meanwhile, I shall arrange minutes of the meeting signed by me and by one of your representatives for you all,” said Mamata to medics, highlighting that in the email there was no mention of ‘live-streaming’.

However, in the email sent to the State Secretariat by the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front, there was mention of "proper transparency” of the meeting.

According to a video message shared by a junior doctor, they had demanded live-streaming or video recording of the meeting by them, which was not accepted today just like Thursday.

On Thursday, too, a scheduled meeting at Nabanna couldn’t take place after there was a deadlock over the issue of live-streaming.
