A large number of women, led by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) Women’s Wing staged protests today in Imphal, demanding the resignation of Manipur Speaker Th Satyabrata and Forest Minister Th Biswajit, citing their perceived inability to effectively govern the state.
The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) is a joint body of Meitei civil society organisations in Manipur.
The demonstrations commenced at Palace Compound, where a sizable gathering of COCOMI activists proceeded to Minister Biswajit's official residence.
Upon finding him absent, they engaged him over the phone, where he assured them of aligning with public aspirations.
Subsequently, the protesters moved to Brahmapur Bheigyabati Leikai to confront Speaker Th Satyabrata. During their meeting, COCOMI's women's wing convenor, Y Leirik Leima, asserted that legislators failing to safeguard Manipur's interests should resign without delay.
Expressing disappointment over perceived inaction amidst escalating tensions, Leima criticized the lack of proactive measures from elected representatives.
In response, Speaker Satyabrata acknowledged the widespread impact of violence in Manipur, expressing empathy for the affected populace.
He emphasised the government's ongoing efforts to restore normalcy and condemned divisive rhetoric aimed at destabilising the state.
Satyabrata underscored the importance of governance grounded in responsibility and integrity, reiterating his commitment to addressing the crisis under the Chief Minister's leadership.
Asserting their role in advising the government on resolving the ongoing challenges, Satyabrata reaffirmed his dedication to protecting the people of Manipur, emphasising that leadership should reflect the trust and support of the populace.
