Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday declared that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will form governments in both Tamil Nadu and West Bengal following the 2026 Assembly elections. Addressing BJP office bearers during a Karyakarta Sammelan (workers’ meet) in Madurai, Shah described the city as a symbol of "Parivartan" (change) and predicted that the gathering would mark the beginning of a political transformation in the state.
Shah launched a scathing attack on the ruling DMK government, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, accusing it of corruption and poor governance. He alleged that the DMK's rule had negatively impacted the poor, women, and children in Tamil Nadu. Highlighting alleged financial irregularities in the state-run liquor enterprise TASMAC, Shah claimed that the funds lost to corruption could have been used to construct at least two classrooms in every school across Tamil Nadu.
Challenging CM Stalin, the Union Home Minister questioned whether the DMK had fulfilled the promises made during its 2021 election campaign. Asserting that the ruling party has been a "100 per cent failure," Shah said that people would decisively vote out the DMK in the upcoming 2026 elections. “In 2026, NDA will form governments in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal,” he said.

Shah also responded to Stalin’s repeated criticism of the Centre, reminding that the BJP-led Union Government had allocated ₹6.80 lakh crore to Tamil Nadu over the last 10 years. “Despite this, Stalin continues to ask what the Centre has done for the state,” he remarked.
Before addressing the party cadre, Shah chaired the BJP Tamil Nadu core committee meeting. Earlier in the day, he visited the historic Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai to offer prayers. This marked his second high-level visit to Tamil Nadu in two months—an indication of the BJP’s intensifying preparations for the 2026 polls.

Referring to the alliance with the AIADMK, which was revived during Shah’s visit to Tamil Nadu in April, state BJP president Nainar Nagendran described it as a “suitable alliance.” He also criticised the DMK government’s handling of law and order, pointing to the recent spate of murders of elderly individuals in the western Kongu region. Nagendran urged party workers to show resolve and claimed that his mission was to bring the maximum number of BJP MLAs into the Tamil Nadu Assembly, likening the effort to a “yatra.”
Nagendran praised Amit Shah as “India’s Iron Man,” likening him to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. BJP state leader K. Annamalai echoed the same sentiment and called on party members to dedicate themselves to the mission of removing the DMK from power. He urged the cadre to continue with their "sankalpa" (resolution) to bring about political change in the state.
Amit Shah’s visit came just a week after the ruling DMK’s general council meeting in Madurai, during which the party had passed resolutions criticising the BJP and the central government. Shah’s presence and strong statements in the same city signal the BJP’s intention to counter the DMK directly on its home turf as it gears up for a serious electoral battle in 2026.
