Scheduled for June 27 at the AICC office in Delhi, the meeting will be attended by JKPCC chief Vikar Rasool Wani, working president Raman Bhalla, Udhampur candidate Chaudhary Lal Singh, and other senior party leaders.

J&K Assembly polls: Cong to hold crucial meet

Despite a record voter turnout in J&K (seen here, queues outside polling booths during the recent Lok Sabha elections), the Congress failed to secure a single seat in the UT, which is why its is likely to introspect before finalising the party strategy for the Assembly elections. (PTI files).

The Congress high command has summoned a crucial meeting ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, and following the party's setback in the UT in the recent Lok Sabha polls.

Scheduled for June 27 at the AICC office in Delhi, the meeting will be attended by JKPCC chief Vikar Rasool Wani, working president Raman Bhalla, Udhampur candidate Chaudhary Lal Singh, and other senior party leaders.

Confirming the developments, a party spokesman stated that “Wani, Bhalla, and Singh (have) already arrived in Delhi for this significant meeting.”

The meeting aims to chart out a fresh strategy and discuss the party's future course of action in light of the challenges faced in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

He added, “Invitations have been extended to former ministers, ex-legislators, senior vice presidents, vice presidents, and heads of frontal organisations of the party to participate in the deliberations.”

While the Congress and its allies have shown an increase in vote percentage compared to the 2019 elections, they did not secure any seats in Jammu and Kashmir during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Sources indicate that Congress alone gained approximately 10% vote share, contrasting with the BJP's reduced vote share.

Internal challenges have surfaced recently, with some Congress leaders from Kashmir raising concerns about JKPCC president Vikar Rasool Wani's leadership style and decision-making process.

Sources suggest that despite calls from Kashmir leaders to replace Wani, the AICC leadership is inclined towards maintaining unity within the party ranks.

The meeting agenda is likely to include introspection into the reasons behind the party's failure in the Jammu and Udhampur Lok Sabha constituencies, as well as devising a robust plan for the forthcoming Assembly elections.

While fact-finding committees have been set up in certain states to assess the party’s electoral performance, Jammu and Kashmir is not on that list according to the AICC's general secretary (org), KC Venugopal.

Leaders from Jammu and Kashmir are expected to convene in Delhi on Wednesday or Thursday morning for the afternoon meeting on June 27.
