The meteorological office in Srinagar on Monday predicted isolated to scattered rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir over the coming days. As per the forecast, brief spells of rain and thundershowers, accompanied by gusty winds, are likely at isolated to scattered locations across the Union Territory until June 20.

A more active weather system is expected from June 21 to 23, with generally cloudy skies and intermittent rain and thundershowers likely across the majority of Jammu and Kashmir, it said.

In the past 24 hours, the Jammu region witnessed fairly widespread light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunder and gusty winds. Jammu city recorded 46.0 mm of rainfall during this period.

Meanwhile, the temperatures have continued to hover above for the second time in a row across the Union territory. The majority of the Kashmir Valley recorded above-normal temperatures, ranging 2-3 degrees Celsius on average, while the Jammu division saw a deviation of 1–3 degrees Celsius above the seasonal normal.

A similar pattern has been observed during night temperatures, which also remained unusually high, with most areas in Kashmir recording minimum temperatures 1–6 degrees Celsius above average. Similarly, many parts of Jammu reported minimums 1–5 degrees Celsius above normal.

The lowest minimum temperatures were recorded in Gulmarg at 11.6 degrees Celsius in Kashmir and Banihal at 15.6 degrees Celsius in Jammu. The incoming rainfall is likely to provide much-needed relief to the residents, who were facing the unprecedented ongoing heatwave.

Jammu & Kashmir has experienced significant shifts in its weather patterns over the past year, marked by a rainfall deficit, increased temperatures, and a decline in snowfall, particularly in the winter months.

These changes are attributed to climate change and have impacted various sectors, including agriculture, horticulture, and tourism, while also raising concerns about water availability and glacier melt.
