From the academic year 2026, students across government schools in Jharkhand will study the life and legacy of Late Shibu Soren as part of their school curriculum.
The state government has approved the inclusion of his biography in textbooks ranging from Class 2 to Class 11, with chapters carefully designed to highlight his role as a social reformer, environmentalist, and political leader.
The proposal, presented by the Department of School Education and Literacy, received the consent of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, and the draft curriculum has already been cleared by the government.
Officials said that the content for the new chapters is ready, and the tender process for printing textbooks will begin next month.
In total, ten chapters on Shibu Soren will be incorporated across seven different grades. Class 8 will include three chapters, while Class 6 will feature two.
Students of Classes 2, 4, 7, 9, and 10 will each study one chapter. The chapters will be distributed across subjects such as Hindi, Environmental Science, Social Studies, and Political Science, ensuring that Soren’s life is explored from multiple perspectives.
For instance, Class 2 students will be introduced to him through the Hindi story Bahadur Shivalal, while Class 4 will learn about his commitment to environmental protection in Shibu Soren: Environmental Conservation.
Social Studies in Class 6 will focus on his anti-addiction campaign and livelihood initiatives, while Class 7 students will study a Hindi play titled Guruji ka Akil Akhada.
Class 8 will offer the richest coverage, including a short biography in Hindi, a chapter on Dishom Guru and Abua Raj, and another on Guruji’s Court – Chetav Baishi/Vichar Baishi.
In Class 9, Hindi will feature an essay titled Shibu Soren: Guardian of Tribal Consciousness, while Class 10 Political Science will include a chapter on Guruji’s Nineteen-Point Programme.
A seven-member committee had been formed to finalise the syllabus. With this decision, the state government seeks to ensure that young learners gain a deeper understanding of Shibu Soren’s lifelong struggles for tribal identity, environmental protection, and social reforms.
