The ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in Jharkhand has written to the Election Commission of India seeking a level playing field in the upcoming assembly elections.

It has also demanded that the polls be conducted in the month of December so that the present government could complete its full term.

The JMM in its letter has also said that in election speeches, confusion is created among the voters by opposition parties, which affects the voting and the voters also get divided on social-religious lines.

It further said that this creates extremely worrying situations which give a severe blow to the healthy democratic process. To prevent such a situation from arising in future, concrete guidelines should be sent to all political parties after discussing it so that a level playing ground is ensured.

The JMM further urged to ensure that no specific religion or caste is mentioned in political and election campaigns. Since last August, many central level leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party have been speaking election language in the name of religion and caste in our state, due to which a situation of religious-cultural division has arisen in the society.

It said that it is the ECI’s responsibility to ensure that communal polarization does not take place and the entire society can vote freely and without fear keeping in view the aspirations and public interest and communal harmony is also maintained.

Meanwhile, a team of Election Commission of India (ECI) led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar reached Ranchi on a two-day visit to State to review preparations for upcoming assembly elections in Jharkhand on Monday.

The Commission first held Meetings with national and state-level recognised parties for their feedback and suggestions. During the meeting, the Chief Election Commissioner appealed to all political parties for cooperation in conducting the upcoming assembly elections in a free and fair manner.

After meeting with political parties, the Commission held a meeting with the various central and state enforcement agencies like Income Tax Department, Excise Department, GST, Reserve Bank, Forest, Transport, Civil Aviation, Narcotics etc. and reviewed their action plans. Clear instructions were given by the commission to ensure an inducement-free elections.

Subsequently, the Commission reviewed preparations with Chief Electoral Officer of the state K Ravi Kumar and State Police Nodal Officer A.V. Homkar and the nodal officer of CAPF. The officers presented their respective action plans and the Commission gave necessary directions to the officials for a smooth and peaceful conduct of forthcoming assembly elections in the state.

Jharkhand Assembly elections Assembly elections in Jharkhand are scheduled to be held later this year.

In 2019, elections for the 81 assembly seats were conducted in five phases from November 30 to December 20 and the results were announced on December 23.

According to the Election Commission sources, this time, the polls are likely to take place in two to three phases. Currently, the state is governed by a coalition led by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), with Congress and RJD as key partners.
