Jharkhand Mukti Morcha is set to restart its decades’ old demand of an autonomous council by combining some districts of neighbouring states West Bengal and Odisha. The party is preparing to start a movement for this soon.
The JMM will soon start a movement to form an autonomous council by combining four tribal-dominated districts of West Bengal and three tribal-dominated districts of Odisha.
The party has planned to start a movement in the name of separate identity and tribal identity of tribal-dominated districts of West Bengal and Odisha.
The strategy and proposal of the movement will be presented in the party's convention schedules soon.
JMM General Secretary cum Spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya said that the condition of the tribal community has not improved even now in the tribal-dominated districts of neighbouring states.
He said that the tribals are facing exploitation and atrocities. The JMM has been fighting for tribal identity and now it will intensify the struggle to form an 'Autonomous Council'.
Bhattacharya said that Jharkhand Mukti Morcha is going to start a movement demanding the formation of an autonomous council by combining the four tribal-dominated districts of West Bengal namely Jhargram, West Medinipur, Bankura and Purulia.
Similarly, a struggle will be started to form an autonomous council by combining the three districts of Odisha namely Keonjhar, Myrbhanj and Sundargarh, he added.
Bhattacharya said that the lifestyle, behaviour and culture of the tribals living in these seven districts of West Bengal and Odisha is similar to that of the tribals of Jharkhand.
Notably, an autonomous council is a statutory body established for administrative purposes in the tribal areas of India. It comes under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
Through the council, the people of the tribal community can take advantage of self-governance and can preserve their culture and traditions. These councils also have legislative, judicial and executive powers in some cases.
