Students in Kerala might soon enjoy "bagless days" at school, with the state government contemplating an initiative to alleviate the burden of heavy school bags.
The move comes in response to increasing complaints from parents and educators regarding the weight of school bags, as stated by General Education Minister V. Sivankutty.
The proposal, aimed at students from Class 1 to 12, suggests implementing at least four bag-free days each month.
Sivankutty highlighted that the government is actively considering various measures to address these concerns and enhance the school experience for children.
In an official statement on Friday, Sivankutty revealed that the government will soon decide on the issue of heavy school bags.
Despite efforts to reduce the burden by printing and distributing textbooks in two parts, complaints about the weight of school bags persist.
The proposed initiative would ensure that the weight of school bags for Class 1 students remains between 1.6 kg and 2.2 kg, and for Class 10 students, between 2.5 kg and 4.5 kg.
The "bag-free days" would be part of a broader strategy to provide relief to students and promote a healthier educational environment.
