The Kuki Inpi Sadar Hills and the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) have issued urgent advisories to the Kuki-Zo community in Manipur, warning of possible attacks on September 28, 2024.
Both organisations urged citizens to remain vigilant, following intelligence reports of militant activity targeting their community.
The Kuki Inpi, representing the Kuki tribes in Sadar Hills, dismissed allegations of 900 militants arriving in the state to target the Meitei population as "baseless" and "propaganda."
According to the advisory, these false claims resemble previous instances where similar unfounded reports were used to incite violence against the Kuki people.
“Earlier this year, similar rumours claimed that 200 Kuki militants were planning attacks on the Meitei, which also proved to be untrue,” the advisory stated.
To prevent potential unrest, the Kuki Inpi urged community members to avoid unnecessary travel and called on central forces to ensure the safety of the Kuki people during this period.
In a parallel move, the ITLF, which represents the recognised tribes of Churachandpur, held an emergency meeting in response to concerns raised by Manipur’s security advisor, Kuldiep Singh, who hinted at an imminent attack.
The forum stressed that recent developments pointed to the possibility of the Kuki-Zo community being targeted in a violent assault.
The ITLF outlined precautionary measures in its advisory, including travel restrictions, border closures, the shutdown of schools, and a complete shutdown of the region on September 28, with essential services being the only exception.
Village volunteers have been mobilised to ensure community safety, and medical teams have been placed on standby.
The forum also questioned the legitimacy of government claims about the alleged influx of 900 militants from Myanmar, calling it a "deliberate attempt to malign the Kuki-Zo people and justify attacks against them."
