Lovely quits as Delhi Cong chief because of AAP tie-up, LS tickets to 'outsiders'

Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely has resigned from his post in protest over Cong-AAP alliance and fielding of 'outsiders' for Delhi LS seats.

- New Delhi - UPDATED: April 28, 2024, 12:23 PM - 2 min read

Even in the three seats (while rejecting the views of the PCC, all observers and local party workers) the northwest Delhi and northeast Delhi seats were given to two candidates who were "total strangers to the Delhi Congress and party policies," Lovely has said.

Lovely quits as Delhi Cong chief because of AAP tie-up, LS tickets to 'outsiders'

Arvinder Singh Lovely has said the Delhi Congress Unit is against an alliance with "a party," (read AAP) which was formed "on the sole basis of levelling false, fabricated and malafide corruption charges against the Congress Party.(PTI)"

Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely has resigned from his post, baring his heart in a letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge about not being allowed to function independently, protesting also over the Aam Aadmi Party's tie-up with his party and fielding 'outsiders' for Delhi LS seats, news channels have reported.

In the letter to Kharge, posted on social media channel X, Lovely said the Delhi Congress Unit was against an alliance with "a party," (read AAP) which was formed "on the sole basis of levelling false, fabricated and malafide corrpution charges against the Congress Party." This was a party which had half of its  cabinet ministers presently in jail on corruption charges, he wrote.

However, Lovely said the Congress' decision to ally with AAP was a decision he respected. "Not only did I publicly back the decision, I also ensured that the

full state unit fell in line with the high command's final order."

Despite his position on the matter, Lovely said he visited Kejriwal's residence on the night of his arrest on instructions from the AICC general secretary.

Allotment of three parliamentary seats to Congress "in line with the alliance", was also a bugbear, he said, because of which he had withdrawn his name as a "potential" candidate in his party's interests.

Even in the three seats (while rejecting the views of the PCC, all observers and local party workers) the northwest Delhi and northeast Delhi seats were given to two candidates who were "total strangers to the Delhi Congress and party policies."

The PCC had not been informed of the decision, and when some PCC members had protested, the AICC general secretary (Delhi incharge)  Deepak Barbaria

had wanted disciplinary action against them, he added.

Udit Raj is Congress-AAP joint candidate in northeast Delhi and Kanhaiya Kumar is being fielded from the northwest seat.

Kanhaiya Kumar was also criticised by lovely for "falsely praising " Kejriwal against the Congress party's line and the local party workers' "beliefs".

He also said all unanimous decisions taken by senior Delhi congress leaders had been unilaterally vetoed by AICC general secretary (Delhi in-charge). "Since my appointment as DPCC President, the AICC General Secretary (Delhi in-charge) has not allowed me to make any senior appointments in the DPCC," he complained in his letter to Kharge.
