Luxury vehicles, CNG or LNG cars and cargo carriers in Maharashtra will become costlier from Tuesday following the new one-time tax policy of the state government, government officials said. The ceiling for one-time tax has been fixed at ₹30 lakh, in place of the current ₹20 lakh, and thus cars worth over ₹20 lakh ex-showroom will become costlier by a minimum of ₹10 lakh, they added. Luxury diesel and petrol vehicles registered in the name of an individual, priced approximately ₹1.33 crore and ₹1.54 crore, respectively, will now have to pay over ₹20 lakh as one-time tax, RTO officials said on Monday.
In Maharashtra, the one-time tax for petrol vehicles registered in the name of an individual is 11 per cent for those priced less than ₹10 lakh, 12 per cent for those between ₹10 lakh and ₹20 lakh, and 13 per cent for those above ₹20 lakh, they added.
For diesel vehicles, the one time tax is 13 per cent if they are priced under ₹10 lakh, 14 per cent for the four-wheelers with a price range of ₹10 lakh to ₹20 lakh, and 15 per cent for the ones which cost over ₹20 lakh.
If a car is registered or imported on the company's name, petrol and diesel cars both impose a flat one-time tax of 20 per cent irrespective of their value, the officials highlighted.

As per the RTO officials, vehicles which use compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG) will also increase marginally in price, with one-time tax being increased by 1 per cent across all the three price bands.
Vehicles like pickup trucks, tempos with a gross vehicle weight of up to 7,500 kg, and construction equipment like cranes, compressors and projectors will now attract tax at 7 per cent of their cost.
A top RTO official stated that these vehicles will now be taxed on their cost and not on their gross weight as was the case till now. For instance, previously a ₹10 lakh pickup vehicle would charge a tax of approximately ₹20,000 on a weight basis, which under the new structure will be approximately ₹70,000, he added.
As per the website of the transport department, the previous one-time tax was between ₹8,400 and ₹37,800 for goods vehicles with weights between 750 kg and 7,500 kg. The official added that electric cars (EVs) will be exempted from taxes like before. Although the state government had previously suggested a 6 per cent tax for EVs that cost more than ₹30 lakh, the proposal was subsequently withdrawn.
