West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday announced that her government would transfer funds to the bank accounts of 21 lakh unpaid MGNREGA workers in the state by February 21.
CM Banerjee had started a 48-hour-dharna in front of BR Ambedkar statue in the city on Friday demanding the Centre to release ‘unpaid dues’ from the Centre for various social welfare schemes.
“We do not want to beg the Bharatiya Janata Party nor do we want BJP’s alms. By February 21, we will transfer money to the bank accounts of 21 lakh workers who did not get the money even working for three years under the 100 days of work scheme,” Banerjee announced from the dharna stage.
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 (MGNREGA), provides livelihood and security of households to locals of rural areas by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year.
West Bengal has 21 lakh MGNREGA workers. Funds of whom have been withheld by the Centre, claims the TMC. The West Bengal state government has called out the Centre on several occasions to clear the dues.
On the final day of the on-going dharna in the state, CM Banerjee’s announcement to clear the dues of the state’s MGNREGA workers must have come as a relief for them.
The TMC supremo also said that her party will go all out against the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls.
