Following the lifting of a "total shutdown" imposed by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) in Churachandpur district, normalcy gradually returned to the town on Saturday after two days of unrest sparked by the suspension of a constable.
Officials reported the reopening of schools, markets, and business establishments, signifying a resumption of routine activities. However, a "public curfew" implemented by student organizations from 6pm to 6am remains in place across the district.
Sporadic reports of gunfire continue to emerge from remote villages bordering the valley region, officials added.
The unrest began on Thursday evening when a mob stormed the mini-secretariat in Churachandpur to protest the suspension of constable Siamlalpaul, filmed in a viral video with armed men.
The incident led to vandalism and fire damage within the mini-secretariat area, including the deputy commissioner's official residence.
The ITLF has demanded the removal of district SP Shivanand Surve and DC S Dharun Kumar, urging their replacement with "officers preferably from Kuki Zo community."
They further warned of closing all government offices and holding the DC and SP responsible for any further disturbances if Siamlalpaul's suspension remains unaddressed.
The shutdown enforced by the ITLF on Friday had paralyzed normal life in Churachandpur, leaving streets and markets deserted.
