Jammu and Kashmir PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said August 5 marks “a black day” for the entire country, as the unconstitutional move of abrogating Article 370 was carried out in the country’s Parliament.

She claimed that her party leaders were restricted from stepping out of the party headquarters in Srinagar, where they had planned to take out a protest march against what she called the “unconstitutional” move carried out by the BJP-led Centre on August 5, 2019.

“August 5 is a black day not just for J&K, but for the entire country, as the Centre subverted the Constitution,” Mehbooba said in a post on X.

She said, “While Jammu and Kashmir was a test lab for the government, the nation can now clearly see experiments in the other parts.”

She warned that the same precedent is now unfolding across the country. In Bihar, she said, SIR threatens to disenfranchise lakhs of people.

Further, she alleged that “non-BJP states are being fuelled with outside voters, like in Tamil Nadu and Jammu and Kashmir, accusing the BJP of carrying out demographic changes in these regions.”

“If the nation does not wake up from the slumber that started in J&K will take place across the nation soon,” she added.

She went further and said, “These curbs placed on leaders' suppression of democratic voices have become the new normal in Kashmir, especially under the current LG administration.”

Her daughter, Iltija Mufti, added, “On August 5, 2019, not only did the centre take away the special status but also our constitution, flag and identity was snatched from us.”

“Even after marking 6 years of the abrogation of Article 370, the people and the political leadership in Jammu and Kashmir are not allowed to take a peaceful protest march,” she said.

Iltija questioned, “Which part of the Indian Constitution is being implemented here? Our rights are being snatched. It is undemocratic and unconstitutional to suppress the political voices of Jammu and Kashmir.”
