J&K People's Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti has urged the Union Government to take steps to ensure the safety of more than 1,300 Kashmiri students after tensions between Tel Aviv and Tehran intensified on the fourth day on Monday.
In her post on ‘X’, Mehbooba Mufti wrote, “Families of the stranded students in Iran are growing increasingly anxious with each passing day. I earnestly urge the Ministry of External Affairs to intervene and take immediate steps to ensure the safe return of their loved ones.”
Earlier on Sunday, the Ministry of External Affairs, in an official statement, said the Indian Embassy in Tehran was actively working to ensure the safety and well-being of Indian students studying in Iran amid the current security situation.
“The embassy is monitoring the situation and engaging with students to provide support and assistance. The Indian Embassy in Tehran is continuously monitoring the security situation and engaging Indian students in Iran to ensure their safety,” read the statement.
“In some cases, students are being relocated with the Embassy’s facilitation to safer places within Iran. Other feasible options are also under examination. Further updates will follow,” added the statement.
On Monday, the reports confirmed that at the gates of Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, Indian students, including dozens from Kashmir, boarded buses under grey skies.
They had packed quickly, carrying little more than their documents and phones. Some hugged their roommates and said goodbye. Others looked silently at the road ahead.
Israel conducted a wide series of strikes on Iranian targets on Sunday, with estimates suggesting that so far the death toll has crossed over 243, with hundreds more injured.
The strikes destroyed infrastructure belonging to the Quds Force, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and the Iranian military in Tehran, according to the Israel Defence Forces (IDF). “Numerous weapons production sites across Iran were targeted,” the IDF said.
Meanwhile, the G7 meeting is likely to take place in Canada, where world leaders from the industrialised nations are gathering to discuss issues about the global order. Germany’s Chancellor Merz said this year’s meeting will be dominated by the Middle Eastern conflicts.
