The Meteorological office in Srinagar has predicted intense rain and thundershowers at isolated places in Jammu and Kashmir in May, stating the possibility of gusty winds at many places on May 30 and 31.

An official said that there is a possibility of a brief spell of rain and thundershowers at isolated places on May 28 (late afternoon) and 29. He said there is a possibility of the spell of light to moderate rain and thundershower at many places, accompanied by intense showers with gusty winds likely at few places in J&K from May 30-31.

‘There is a possibility of moderate to heavy rain, thunder, and gusty winds at scattered places during May 30-31,” he said. The official continued that from June 1–3, the isolated places of Jammu and Kashmir were likely to receive a brief spell of light rain and thundershowers.

Earlier, on May 27, a 60-year-old woman lost her life, and several properties suffered damages across different districts in Kashmir Valley due to gusty winds and heavy rainfall and hailstorms.

A woman identified as Saleema Bano, a resident of Wagad Tral in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, died on the spot after a massive poplar tree fell on her during a strong windstorm. Locals rushed to rescue her but found her lifeless under the fallen tree.

While the majority of the Kashmir region witnessed intense rainfall and hailstorms, Srinagar in particular bore the brunt of the rain, recording approximately 50 mm of rainfall within a span of just four hours.

The sudden, intense showers brought the city to a complete halt, affecting normal life. Waterlogging was also reported in the low-lying areas.

Although authorities have said they are prepared to tackle any situation, the roads after the rainfall depict a completely contrasting picture.

Under the smart city project, between 2018 and early 2025, approximately Rs “713.94 crore have been spent on modernising the city infrastructure, including both Area Based Development (estimated at Rs 2,869.24 crore) and Pan City Solutions (estimated at Rs 765.03 crore),” according to the official website.

The Srinagar Smart City Project, approved under the Smart City Mission, aims to transform the city by enhancing infrastructure and improving the quality of life for its citizens.

The project is implemented through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL).

It is pertinent to mention that parts of Jammu and Kashmir have been witnessing heatwave conditions over the past week.

However, as predicted by the Meteorological Department, temperatures are expected to drop, with chances of thundershowers, rain, and gusty winds likely to continue till the end of this month.
