The authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday recovered an exploded shell from the Dal Lake during a clean-up drive in the water body, officials said. The exploded shell had fallen in the lake during Operation Sindoor in May earlier this year.

During Operation Sindoor, a piece of shell debris was recovered from the Dal Lake near Ount Kadal (Camel Bridge) on May 10. The operation had triggered massive military escalation between India and Pakistan over the Pahalgam attack.

The terrorist attack in Pahalgam claimed the lives of 26 civilians, mostly tourists from the rest of the country.

Meanwhile, during the back-and-forth drone and aerial attacks, several objects, including missile and drone debris, were seen falling into the water body. On Saturday, the shells were recovered by the officials of the Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA), they said.

They said the remains were taken to the nearest police station, where they have been kept for further examination and necessary action. On the evening of May 9 and the morning of May 10, some missile-like objects had fallen deep inside the Dal Lake – a major tourist attraction in Srinagar – after a series of loud explosions rocked the city.

Smoke billowed from the surface of the lake when the object landed, officials had said. The debris was fished out by the security forces. On the same day, another suspected drone was recovered from the outskirts of Srinagar city after multiple blasts had rocked the surrounding areas of the city on May 10.
