In a bid to resolve their longstanding border dispute, the governments of Mizoram and Assam have reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful dialogue and cooperation, signing a joint statement in Aizawl on Friday.

The agreement was formalised by Mizoram’s Home Minister, K. Sapdanga, and Assam’s Minister for Border Protection & Development, Atul Bora, during a high-level meeting at the State Guest House.

This latest development builds on the Goodwill Mission held earlier in the day, an extension of the commitments made during the Chief Ministers’ meeting on February 9, 2024.

The two states are determined to address the inter-state boundary issue through mutual understanding and goodwill, moving away from past tensions that have marked their relations.

To strengthen ties along the border, both governments have agreed to organize joint cultural and sports festivals in the disputed districts.

The first of these events is expected to take place before January 31, 2025, aiming to foster community engagement and enhance mutual understanding between the people of Mizoram and Assam.

A follow-up ministerial meeting is scheduled for Guwahati before March 31, 2025, where unresolved issues will be discussed, and both sides will reinforce their commitment to a peaceful resolution.

In a significant move, both states have also pledged a zero-tolerance approach to the ongoing problem of areca nut smuggling across the border, a source of contention in the region.

To ensure the agreement's implementation, Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police from both states will hold regular meetings.

Monthly virtual meetings will be complemented by in-person gatherings every six months, enabling authorities to monitor the situation and promptly address any emerging issues.
