In a recent divorce case, the Madhya Pradesh High Court explained what an “ideal Indian wife” should be like, while dealing with the case of a couple where the husband had deserted his wife for nearly two decades.
The bench of Justices Vivek Rusia and Binod Kumar Dwivedi was hearing an appeal by the husband challenging the order of the lower court, which had refused to grant him divorce from his wife.
The wife and husband were married as per Hindu tradition and norms in Pipalada village in the district of Indore. They had a son in 2002.
The husband complained to the High Court that his wife did not enjoy his company, blamed him for drinking liquor and for having affairs with other women, and had no interest in marital bonding and feelings of affection. He also accused her of not being content while pregnant, proceeded to her parents' residence after giving birth, and would not reside with him.

The wife, however, denied these claims, saying that her husband had fabricated reasons for divorce and that she was always willing to honor her marital duties. She went on to claim that her husband had formed a romantic affair with a lady co-worker when he was away from her.
The court observed that even after her husband left, the wife continued to reside along with her father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law as a part of a joint Hindu family. She never abandoned her matrimonial home despite her husband not being present.
The court also observed that no member of the husband's family came before the court to vouch for him, which "amply proves" that the charges made by the husband against his wife are untrue.
