Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, while inaugurating a five-day international conference on Nanotechnology, said on Sunday that nanotechnology had become a leading force in transformative changes across multiple sectors, from water management and energy restoration to defence and healthcare.
He noted that Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the Himalayan region, has been facing severe climatic changes in the past few years.
This makes it more important for scientists to develop the much-needed nano-based early warning systems for floods, soil erosion, and other natural calamities.
Sinha, in his inaugural address, said, “Nanotechnology is no longer confined to laboratories. It has entered almost every industry and is being used to solve critical challenges. In our region, where the threat of climate-induced disasters is high, nano-based systems can play a vital role in resilience and preparedness.”
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, development in nanotechnology has received a major boost, enabling Indian scientists and institutions to push the boundaries of innovation.
He also urged private investors to play their role in developing defence equipment using nanotech, pointing to its demonstrated capabilities during Operation Sindoor.
On the role of nanotechnology in healthcare, he said, “We must channel this technology for the betterment of humanity.”
The ongoing conference aims to serve as a platform for the exchange of ideas, collaborations, and showcasing of recent advancements in nanoscience and related tech fields.
