National Conference (NC) President Dr Farooq Abdullah has shifted his stance on the immediate restoration of Article 370, emphasising that addressing the public's problems is now the party’s main focus.

The former three-time Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir made these remarks during a public interaction, just days after his son, Omar Abdullah, assumed the office of Chief Minister for the second time.

Before the elections, the NC's rallies centred on restoring Article 370, statehood, and protecting the rights of J&K residents. However, there now appears to be a shift.

Omar Abdullah commented, “Expecting the restoration of Article 370 from the BJP is foolishness. Our primary focus now is on reducing the hardships faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”

When asked about the status of Article 370, Dr Abdullah remarked, “The most important task for the current government is to address the problems faced by ordinary citizens.”

He highlighted pressing concerns such as unemployment and civic issues, such as poor traffic management. “Scooter riders here don’t even wear helmets. It’s dangerous,” he pointed out, stressing public safety.

In response to speculation regarding his potential nomination to the Rajya Sabha, Dr Abdullah said, “Who said I am going? The day I go, I’ll salute you first.”

Despite this softened stance, the NC continues to maintain that the restoration of Article 370 remains a key part of its political agenda.

However, pressure is mounting from opposition parties to introduce a censure motion against the August 2019 abrogation decision in the newly elected assembly, a promise made by Dr Abdullah during election rallies.

He also praised the government’s decision to end VIP privileges, such as green corridors for high-profile individuals, stating, “Now our ears won’t be disturbed by unnecessary sirens. Whether it’s a common man or a VIP, everyone is equal.”

When asked about the restoration of statehood, Dr Abdullah added, “This has been discussed before, and the Supreme Court has also assured hearings. It will be restored soon.”
