The Central government has commenced the installation of 10 X-Band Doppler Weather Radars (DWRs) across the Northeastern states to enhance the region's weather forecasting and monitoring capabilities.
The move is part of a broader initiative to strengthen India's meteorological infrastructure.
Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, recently informed the Rajya Sabha about the procurement and installation of these radars in key locations across the Northeast, including Guwahati, Dhubri, Jorhat, Tezpur, and Silchar in Assam; Aizawl in Mizoram; Dimapur in Nagaland; Imphal in Manipur; and Mandala Top and Namsai in Arunachal Pradesh.
Dr. Singh expressed his confidence that these radars would significantly bolster the region’s ability to monitor and respond to weather-related events.
The initiative is particularly crucial given the Northeast's vulnerability to sudden and extreme weather changes.
In addition to the installations in the Northeast, an X-Band DWR has been procured for Lahaul & Spiti District in Himachal Pradesh, another region prone to severe weather conditions.
The installation of these radars is anticipated to improve the accuracy of weather predictions, contributing to more effective disaster management.
The enhanced forecasting ability is expected to save lives and minimise property damage during extreme weather events, which are frequent in these regions.
