No relief from cold in Punjab & Haryana; snowfall in Valley

There was no let-up in cold weather conditions in Punjab and Haryana on Tuesday with Gurdaspur district recording the lowest minimum temperature at 5 degrees Celsius.

 

Some parts of the two states were shrouded in fog early in the morning. In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a low of 6.5 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal, according to a meteorological department report.

 

Faridkot recorded a minimum temperature of 6.9 degrees Celsius, Bathinda 8 degrees Celsius, Ludhiana 10.2 degrees Celsius, Patiala 10.4 degrees Celsius and Pathankot 10.7 degrees Celsius.

 

In Haryana, Narnaul recorded a low of 6.5 degrees Celsius, Karnal 10 degrees Celsius, Bhiwani 10.4 degrees Celsius, Ambala 11 degrees Celsius, Hisar 11.6 degrees Celsius and Rohtak 11.8 degrees Celsius.

 

Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, recorded a low of 11.6 degrees Celsius.

 

Fresh snowfall brings respite from the cold wave in the Valley

 

An official said on Tuesday that following a fresh snowfall, night temperatures rose a few degrees at most places in Kashmir Valley, with minimum temperatures scaling above the freezing point.

 

The minimum temperature settled at 0.9 degrees Celsius in Srinagar, compared to the previous night’s minus 0.5 degrees, the Met office said.

 

On Tuesday, Srinagar witnessed bright sunshine in the morning, bringing respite from the intense cold wave conditions going on in the region for the past three weeks.  

 

Gulmarg, a famous tourist and ski resort in north Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of Minus 6.6 degrees Celsius, compared to the previous night's minus 4.5 degrees.

 

Pahalgam, another famous tourist resort and also the base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra in south Kashmir, witnessed minimum temperatures settling below minus 7.8 degrees Celsius and remained the coldest place in the entire Kashmir valley.

 

Qazigund, the gateway town to the valley, logged a low of 0.4 degrees Celsius, while Konibal in Pampore town registered a minimum temperature of minus 0.4 degrees.

 

Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag in south Kashmir saw the mercury settle at minus 0.5 degrees.

 

Kashmir is under the grip of Chillai-Kalan, an annual weather phenomenon that lasts for 40 days and is known as the harshest period of winter, which begins on December 21 every year and lasts till 31st January.

 

During this period, the chances of snowfall are the highest and the temperature drops considerably.
