More than 62,000 Ganesh idols were immersed in Mumbai's water bodies on the second day of the Ganesh festival, civic officials said on Monday.
The festival, which began on Saturday, saw families and 'sarvajanik mandals' (public groups) installing idols at homes and in community pandals across the city.
Immersions began on Sunday afternoon, after one-and-a-half days of celebrations. By midnight, 62,569 idols had been immersed in the sea, various water bodies, and artificial ponds, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
"No untoward incidents were reported during the immersion process," the BMC said in a statement.
Among the idols immersed were 62,197 household idols and 348 public idols. Of these, 29,923 household idols and 234 public idols were immersed in artificial ponds, which are used to reduce pollution in natural water bodies.
The 10-day Ganesh festival sees devotees bid farewell to the deity after varying durations, including one-and-a-half days, five days, seven days, and on the festival's final day, known as Anant Chaturdashi.
