A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Jharkhand High Court seeking a ban on the State Government’s recently launched ‘Mukhyamantri Maiyna Samman Yojana’, which promises Rs 1000 every month to women in the age group of 21 to 49.
The petitioner, Vishnu Sahu from Simdega district has accused the government of offering free schemes to attract voters ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
In the PIL, the petitioner referenced a Supreme Court ruling that states nothing should be distributed for free. He contends that the scheme has been introduced purely for electoral purposes, which he believes is a violation of the Supreme Court's guidelines.
The 'Mukhyamantri Mainiya Samman Yojana' is a major initiative of the JMM-Cingress-RJD coalition government in Jharkhand, designed to provide financial assistance of Rs 1,000 per month to all women aged 21 to 49 years in the state.
The scheme is projected to benefit around 40 lakh women across Jharkhand through direct benefit transfer in their bank accounts.
Notably, the opposition party BJP has ridiculed the scheme, claiming it was announced to deceive the public ahead of the Assembly elections, similar to how the Congress party promised Rs 8,000 annually to women before the Lok Sabha elections—a promise that was never fulfilled.
On the other hand, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has accused the BJP of playing a role in filing of the PIL.
“The BJP does not want the women of Jharkhand to prosper. Despite all their efforts, lies, and tactics, they couldn’t stop Hemant Soren or the ‘Mukhyamantri Maiyna Samman Yojana.’ Now, they are trying to delay the scheme through legal means,” the JMM posted on social media platform X.
