Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Himachal Pradesh on 9 September to assess the devastation caused by incessant rains, former chief minister and BJP leader Jairam Thakur confirmed on Sunday.
“Day after tomorrow, the Prime Minister is coming to Himachal Pradesh to take stock of the loss of life and property due to the heavy rainfall here. I will also go to Dharamshala to attend that meeting and brief him about the situation here,” said Thakur, the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly.
The Prime Minister is also scheduled to travel to Punjab the same day to examine the flood-hit regions.
Himachal Pradesh remains battered by an unrelenting monsoon, with hundreds of roads blocked, widespread power outages, and drinking water schemes left crippled. Official data reveal that since the onset of the season, 366 lives have been lost—203 to rain-related incidents and 163 to road accidents.
According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) of the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, as of 7 September, 866 roads were closed across the hill state, including three national highways: NH-03, NH-05, and NH-305.

Kullu has borne the worst brunt, with 225 roads cut off, followed by Mandi with 191 and Shimla with 154. Other affected districts include Chamba (116), Sirmaur (45), Kangra (42), Una (33), Solan (22), Bilaspur (18), Lahaul and Spiti (11), Kinnaur (6), and Hamirpur (3).
Power supply has also been hit hard. At least 1,572 distribution transformers (DTRs) are currently out of order, the SEOC reported. Kullu again suffered the heaviest blow, with 873 disruptions, followed by Mandi with 259 and Lahaul and Spiti with 142.
Authorities fear the damage to infrastructure could deepen if the rains persist, as the fragile Himalayan terrain has already been destabilised by repeated landslides and flash floods this season.
