The water level at Pong Dam has gone up to more than 5 ft above the danger mark following heavy rainfall in the dam’s catchment areas in Kullu, Mandi and Kangra districts of Himachal Pradesh over the past few days.
The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) said the inflow in the dam’s reservoir was 74,960 cusecs, while the outflow was 59,895 cusecs.
On the other hand, the water level at Bhakra Dam has been kept below the maximum limit to provide a cushion for any unexpected heavy rain in the catchment areas that could lead to a rise in inflows. The level at Bhakra was 3 ft below the upper limit. The inflow was 35,999 cusecs and the outflow 50,000 cusecs.
Experts feel that with the monsoon retreating and the official filling period for dams drawing to a close by the end of this month, reservoirs can be filled to their maximum permissible capacity. The maximum limit for Pong Dam is 1,390 ft, but it can store up to 1,421 ft of water, said a BBMB official.

The meandering Satluj criss-crosses into Pakistan at several points along the border.
The affected villages include Jhangar Bhaini, Teja Ruhela, Dona Nanka, Mahatam Nagar, Dhani Sadda Singh, Gatti Number 1, Retewali Bhaini, Chak Ruhela, Walleshah Hithar and Ram Singh Bhaini. Additional Deputy Commissioner Mandeep Kaur said the district administration is keeping a close watch on the situation.
