Preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Mizoram's Aizawl district are underway at full throttle, with authorities leaving no stone unturned to ensure a seamless electoral process, stated Aizawl Deputy Commissioner Nazuk Kumar, who also serves as the returning officer.
In a briefing to media persons on Monday, Kumar highlighted that extensive training sessions for various official teams tasked with managing the polls across 12 assembly constituencies within Aizawl district have been diligently conducted, laying the groundwork for the electoral proceedings.
The first phase of training for polling personnel is slated for March 26 and March 27, Kumar informed.
Critical tasks such as the randomization of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs) have been meticulously completed, with these essential electoral components now securely stored in designated strong rooms allotted for each assembly constituency, Kumar elaborated.
A comprehensive allocation of 514 ballot units, 523 control units, and 541 VVPATs has been made for Aizawl district, signifying the robust infrastructure in place to facilitate the democratic exercise, Kumar added.
The voting day has been set for April 19, with the counting of votes scheduled for June 4.
March 27 marks the deadline for filing nominations, while candidates have until March 30 to withdraw their candidatures, Kumar further outlined.
Anticipating the participation of 290,058 eligible voters, including 153,000 women, in the upcoming polls, Kumar highlighted the significant representation of first-time voters, senior citizens (aged 85 years and above), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) among the electorate.
Aizawl district, boasting 321 polling stations, is committed to inclusivity, with 48 stations to be managed by women personnel and one exclusively manned by differently-abled individuals, Kumar emphasised.
To ensure maximum participation, home voting facilities will be extended to senior citizens (85 years and above) and PwD voters holding valid disability certificates, Kumar assured.
In concluding remarks, Kumar underscored the collaborative efforts aimed at promoting voter engagement and appealed for public cooperation to uphold the democratic ethos of free and fair elections.
