Punjab has recorded gross GST collections of Rs 13,971 crore in the last six months, a 22.35 per cent increase from Rs 11,418 crore in the first half of the previous financial year. Stating this here on Thursday, state Finance, Planning and Excise and Taxation Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said Punjab has thus far outperformed the national average of around 6 per cent.
Cheema said the recent GST rationalisation had a positive impact with Punjab’s performance “much stronger than the national average”. In September alone, Punjab collected Rs 2,140.82 crore in GST, up from Rs 1,943 crore in September 2024, a growth of 10 per cent. Beyond GST, collections under VAT and Central Sales Tax (CST) also grew 10 per cent, while Punjab State Development Tax (PSDT) rose 11 per cent in September year-on-year.
Cheema attributed the growth in GST collections to rigorous enforcement and reforms by the taxation department in the face of the tariffs imposed by the US.
