The much-needed rainfall has brought respite from the persisting heatwave conditions along with dry weather in Jammu and Kashmir, leading to a significant drop in temperatures across the UT.
As per official stats recently made public by the Meteorological Department of Srinagar, J&K recorded a historic high of 37.4°C on July 5, breaking a 72-year-old record.
In contrast, the Thursday temperatures till the filing of this report recorded a maximum of 27°C, registering a record 15°C drop.
Apart from Srinagar, other parts of the region also witnessed a major drop in temperatures, with Qazigund recording a maximum of 23.1°C, a 5.5°C drop compared to earlier temperatures.
Tourist hotspots, including Pahalgam, recorded 20.5°C, 5.7°C below normal; Kokernag recorded 23.9°C, 3.4°C below normal; Kupwara settled at 23.8°C, 7.3°C below normal; and the famed ski resort of Gulmarg recorded just 15.6°C, 6.2 °C below the seasonal average.
The Jammu division also witnessed a massive drop in temperatures. Jammu city recorded 31.4°C, 4°C below normal.
Banihal registered 25.5°C (3.8°C below normal), Batote 23.3°C (4.2°C below normal), Katra 28.8°C (3.4°C below normal), and Bhaderwah 25.4°C (5.6°C below normal).
MET director Srinagar, Mukhtar Ahmad, said that generally cloudy weather conditions are likely to prevail over the next few days with the possibility of rain and thundershowers at isolated to scattered places.
“A few areas in both the Kashmir and Jammu divisions may witness intense showers and torrential rain. Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated locations in the Jammu division,” he said.
He further added that from July 11 to 13, the weather is expected to turn hot and humid again, though isolated spells of light rain and thundershowers may occur. Another round of light to moderate showers is likely from July 14 to 16.
