Water levels in the Majha region have receded after a dip in rainfall in J&K and Himachal Pradesh, much to the relief of the flood-affected people of Amritsar, Pathankot and Gurdaspur districts.
The upstream inflow at the Harike headworks dropped to 2.77 lakh cusecs on Sunday, while the downstream discharge was 2.6 lakh cusecs. The inflow and discharge a day ago was 2.85 lakh and 2.68 lakh cusecs, respectively. This drop has limited the risk of flooding in villages along the Satluj in the Hathar area. However, extensive damage to crops has been reported from Amritsar and Gurdaspur districts.
The water levels in Dera Baba Nanak, Kalanaur, Dorangla and Dinanagar are receding, but vast tracts of farmland remain submerged.
The situation in Pathankot district is said to be under control. Six spillway gates at Ranjit Sagar Dam were closed and only one was kept open, reducing the release into the Ravi to 32,000 cusecs. The water level of the dam is 3 ft below the danger mark.
With the decline in rainfall, farmers are hoping that early-sown paddy and basmati varieties could be ready for harvest in a few weeks.
