The Union Cabinet on Wednesday gave its approval for the construction of a 19.2-kilometre-long Zirakpur Bypass road project that will run through Punjab and Haryana.
The project, set to be developed at a cost of ₹1,878.31 crore, aims to significantly decongest traffic in the busy trijunction area of Zirakpur, Panchkula, and nearby regions.
The six-lane access-controlled bypass will begin at the junction with NH-7 (Zirakpur–Patiala) and conclude at the junction with NH-5 (Zirakpur–Parwanoo), covering a total length of 19.2 kilometres across the two states. According to an official release, the project will be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), a public-private partnership model that combines government funding with private investment.
Approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the project is strategically designed to improve regional connectivity. It is expected to provide a direct and seamless route for commuters heading towards Himachal Pradesh, while also reducing the traffic burden on the heavily congested sections of NH-7, NH-5, and NH-152.
Officials stated that the bypass will not only benefit daily commuters from Patiala, Delhi, and the Mohali Aerocity area but also improve logistics and emergency response times in the region. By facilitating smoother and faster traffic movement, the project is anticipated to cut travel time and fuel consumption, contributing to both environmental and economic benefits.
