The Supreme Court on Tuesday said the trial in the RG Kar rape and murder case might be completed within a month.
This statement came after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is handling the case, presented a status report. The report revealed that 43 out of 81 witnesses have already testified in the CBI's special court in Kolkata.
The case involves the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College.
Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, while hearing the case initiated by the court itself, instructed the National Task Force (NTF) to submit a report within 12 weeks. The NTF was formed after the RG Kar incident to ensure better protection for medical professionals.
Earlier, on November 7, the Supreme Court had ordered the NTF to take several steps, such as installing CCTV cameras in all government healthcare facilities to enhance safety.
The next hearing for the rape and murder case has been scheduled for March 17, 2025.
Currently, the trial is being conducted daily and privately in Kolkata. According to the CBI's chargesheet, the only suspect in the case is Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police.
