The water level at Pong Dam, which was already a few inches above the danger mark for the past few days, rose by another 2 feet after heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the Beas in Himachal Pradesh, threatening to compound the woes of flood-hit villages located close to the river in Punjab. The swollen Beas had flooded over 100 villages in Kapurthala, submerging crops on thousands of acres.
The water inflow at Pong Dam was 64,964 cusecs, far more than the 49,899 cusecs released on Monday morning. At Bhakra Dam, the water level was almost 4 feet below the danger mark.

In Punjab, where monsoon has been surplus by 50 per cent, light to moderate rain with spells of heavy rainfall was reported at isolated places over the past 24 hours. The weather department has predicted light to moderate rain at some places till September 19 with dry weather thereafter.
